Cǎoyè hé cài yè dōu méng gài shàng huībáisè shuāng. Shānshàng huángle yèzi de shù, zài děnghòu tàiyáng. Tàiyáng chūláile, yòu zǒu jìn zhāoxiá qù. Yě diān shàng de huāhuā cǎocǎo, zài piāo sòng zhe qiūtiān língluò qīmí de xiāngqì.

The blades of grass and vegetable leaves are hidden under a layer of silver frost. On the mountain, the trees that have turned yellow are waiting for the sun. The sun is coming out, once again walking towards the rosy glow of the early morning clouds. The flowers and grass of the open fields wear autumn's fragrance of desolation and melancholy.

Wùqì xiàng yún yān yīyàng méngbìle yěhuā, xiǎohé, cǎowū, méngbìle yīqiè shēngxī, méngbìle yuǎnjìn de shāngǎng.

The misty fog, like smoky clouds, shrouds the wildflowers, creak, and straw huts; shrouding all sound; shrouding the hills, near and far.

Wáng a sǎo lāzhe xiǎo huán měitiān zài tàiyáng jiāng chūlái de shíhòu, dào qián cūn guǎng chǎng shàng gěi tā zhǔ menliúzhe hàn; xiǎo huán suī shì qī suì, tā yě xuézhe gěi dìzhǔ menliúzhe hàn. Xiànzài chūntiānguòle, xiàtiānguòle‧‧‧‧‧‧ wáng a sǎo shénme huójì dōu zuòguò, bá miáo chāyāng. Qiūtiān yī lái dào, wáng'āsǎo hé bié de cūn fùmen dōu zuò zài máo yán xià yòng má shéng bǎ qiézi chuān chéng cháng chuàn cháng chuàn de, yīzhí chuānzhuó. Bùguǎn wénchóng bǎ liǎn hé shǒu yǎo dé zěnyàng hóng zhǒng, yě bùguǎn háizimen zài wū guǒ hǎnjiào māmā chǎo duànle hóulóng. Zhǐshì chuān a, chuān a, liǎng zhī shǒu xiàng fǎngshā chē yīyàng, zài xuánzhuǎnzhe chuān.

Every day just before sunrise, Mrs. Wáng, leading Little Huán by the hand, goes to the village fields to sweat for the landowners; Little Huán, only seven years old, also learned to contribute a little child's sweat for the landowners. Spring has passed, summer has passed ... Mrs. Wáng has performed all kinds of tasks, planting the seeds and pulling out the weeds. Now that autumn has arrived, Mrs. Wáng along with the other village women sat under the thatch eaves using hemp rope to string together rows and rows of eggplants, continuously stringing. It didn't matter how many mosquitoes would bite their faces and hands, making them red and swollen, or how much the babies inside screamed themselves hoarse crying out Mama! They continued to string together eggplants, stringing, stringing, their two hands like a spinning wheel, over and over, ever stringing.

Dì èr tiān zǎochén, qiézi jiù hé zǐsè chéng chuàn de língdāng yīyàng, guà mǎnle wáng a sǎo de qián yán; jiù liányòng liǔtiáo biàn chéng de duǎn qiáng shàng yě guà mǎnzhe zǐsè de língdāng. Bié de cūn fù yě hé wáng'āsǎo yīyàng, yán qián jǐnzhe shì qiézi.

The next morning, the strings of eggplants are like strings of purple bells, hanging from Mrs. Wáng's eaves, from end to end, even her wicker fence was completely covered with rows of purple bells. The other village women's eaves were also brimming over with strings of eggplants.

Kěshìguò bu le jǐ tiān zǐ qiézi shài chéng gāncàile! Jiā jiā dōu〕 fángyán bǎ qiézi jiě xiàlái, sòng dào dìzhǔ de shōucáng shì qù. Wáng'āsǎo dào dōngtiān zhǐ chī zhuó dìzhǔ yòng yǐ wèi zhū de làn tǔdòu, lián yīpiàn gāncài yě bùcéng jìnguò wáng'āsǎo de zuǐ.

After a few days the sunning eggplants turn into dried vegetables. Every family unties the eggplants from the eaves, and sends them to the landowner's storehouse. In the winter, Mrs. Wáng only eats the rotting potatoes that the landowner feeds the pigs, not a single slice of dried vegetable makes its way into Mrs. Wáng's mouth.

Tàiyáng zài dōngbian fàngshèzhe láogōng de yǎnjīng. Mǎn shān de wù qì tuìqù, nánrén hé nǚrén, zài tiánzhuāng shàng mánglùzhe. Yáng qún héniú qún zàiyě diànzi jiān, zài shānpō jiān, jiàntà bìngqiě xún shízhe qiūtiān bàn qiáocuì de yěhuā.

The glare of the eastern sun beams directly into the laborer's eyes. The mountain fog recedes, men and women are toiling on the farm. Flocks of sheep and cows, traipsing in the fields and hillsides, are foraging among the half withered autumn wildflowers.

Tiánzhuāng shàng zhǐshì méiyǒu wáng'āsǎo de yǐngzi, zhè què bùzhī wèile shénmó? Zhú sān yé měitiān dào guǎng chǎng shàng tì zhāng dìzhǔ zhīpèi gōngrén. Xiànzài zhú sān yé pài yīgè zhèngzài shí tǔdòu de xiǎo gūniáng qù zhǎo wáng'āsǎo.

Why is it that the only thing missing on the farm is the shadow of Mrs. Wáng? Third Master Zhú, who oversees the workers for landowner Zhāng, comes to the field each morning to allocate tasks. He sent a young girl who was digging up potatoes to find Mrs. Wáng.

Gōngrén de tóumù, lèng sān qiǎngzhe shuō:

The lead worker, LèngSān, quickly spoke up:

— Bùrú wǒ qù de hǎo, wǒ shì nánrén zǒu dé kuài.—

"Let me go instead. I'm a man, I'll be faster."

Dédào zhú sān yé de yǔnxǔ, bù dào liǎng fēnzhōng de gōngfū, lèng sān pǎo dào wáng'āsǎo de chuāng qiánle:

With Third Master Zhú's permission, in less than two minutes, LèngSān ran up to Mrs. Wáng's window:

— Wáng'āsǎo! Wèishéme bù qù zuògōng ne?—

"Mrs. Wáng, why are you not working?"

Guǒ miànjiēzhe jiùshì dá shēng:

Immediately came a reply from inside:

Shūshu lái zhènghǎo, qiú nǐ dào qián cūn bǎ wáng mèizi jiào lái, wǒ tóutòng, jīntiān bù qù zuògōng.

"Sir, I'm so glad you are here, can you please ask Sister Wáng at the front village, to come? I have a headache and will not be working today."

Xiǎo huán zuò wáng'āsǎo de shēnbiān, tā kūzhe, xiǎngzhe bízi shuō: — Bùshì ya! Wǒ māmā chěhuǎng, tā de dùzi tài dàle! Bùnéng zuògōng, zuó wǎn yòu shì zhěng yè de kū, bùzhī shì dùzi tòng hái háishì xiǎng wǒ de bàba?—

Little Huán, who was sitting next to Mrs. Wáng, crying and sniffling said, "That's not true! Mama is lying, her stomach is too big. She can't work, she cried all throughout the night, I don't know if it is because her stomach hurts or because she misses Papa."

Wáng'āsǎo de shāngxīn chù chù bèi xiǎo huán jī dǎ, měngliè de jī dǎzhe, yǎnlèi dōu cóng yǎnkuàng zhuǎn dào sǎngzi fāngmiàn qù, tā zhǐ dào yòng shǒu pāidǎzhe xiǎo huán, tā jíxìng de, yìsi shì bù jiào xiǎo huán zàishuō xiàqù.

Little Huán struck at the heart of Mrs. Wáng's sorrow, a devastating blow, and tears overflowed from her eyes to her throat. She gave Little Huán a sharp slap to stop her from talking.

Lǐ lèng sān shì wáng'āsǎo nánrén de biǎo dì. Tīngle xiǎo huán dehuà, xiàng dòngle qīn qīnshǔ qǐng gǎn shì de, pǎo dào qián cūn qùle!

Lǐ LèngSān, the younger cousin of Mrs. Wáng's husband, after hearing Little Huán's words, feeling concerned for his relative, ran to the front village.

Xiǎo huán pá shàng chuāngtái, yòng tā bù huì shūtóu de xiǎoshǒu, zài jǐ zìjǐ shūzhe máo péng péng de xiǎobiàn. Lín jiā de xiǎo māo tiào shàng chuāngtái, dūnjù zài xiǎo huán de tuǐ shàng, māo xiàng qǔnuǎn shì de chíhuǎn de bǎ yǎnjīng zhēng kāi, yòu hélǒng lái.

Little Huán climbed on the windowsill, with her little hands that do not know how to use a comb, tried to put her tousled hair into pigtails. The neighbor's kitten jumped on the windowsill, curling up in Little Huán's lap, as if warming itself, languidly opened its eyes, then closed them.

Yuǎn chǔ de shān fǎnyìngzhe zhǒng yàng zhāoxiá de cǎisè, shānpō shàng de yáng qún, niú qún jiù xiàng xiǎo hēi diǎn shì de, zài yúnxiá guǒ pá qù.

The distant mountains mirror the multicolored morning sky, the flocks of sheep and cows on the hillside are tiny black dots roaming among those glowing iridescent clouds.

Xiǎo huán bùguǎn zhèxiē, zhǐshì zài zìjǐ shūmáo péng péng de xiǎobiàn.

Little Huán did not notice any of this, trying to comb her disheveled hair into pigtails.
