Gazing on Central Hong Kong

Updated: Aug 3

Yuǎnwàng zhōnghuán mǎlù shàng chēliàng láiwǎng

Gazing on the cars coming and going on the streets of Central District;

Zài nàn jiàn fēnfēn duǒ duǒ biàndì tíng lì

It is rare to see such an abundance of pavilions.

Shāngshà gāocéng lùtái yángsǎn qún biān fān fēi

A skyscraper with deck umbrellas, fringes flapping and flying;

Mòjìng lǐ kàn wūyún mànguò bōlí mùqiáng

Through sunglasses, watching black clouds freely pass by the wall of glass.

Lóutī zhuǎnjiǎo xián guàzhe xiānyàn de mínghuà

Leisurely turning at the stair landing, there hangs a bright colorful famous painting;

Shūfáng guì jià shàng de lìshǐ yīchénbùrǎn

In the study, the shelves of history are spotless.

Shéi shì xiāoshī de pèijiǎo? Yǐ chuāng tiàowàng

Who is assisting in the disappearance? Leaning against the window, seeing

Zhē dǎ huāyuán shū lín xiǎojìng jìng chí liángtíng

Chater Garden: the groves, trails, still pond, and pavilion.

Shí dèng shàng wài yōng bù fēn nǐ wǒ pù xí fēn shí

On the stone bench, the domestic servants laid down a mat and shared food generously with one another;

Wǒmen déguòqiěguò kàn yīduàn jìngyīn yǐngpiàn ba

We might as well watch this silent movie.

During war, the bronze statue of the Queen was smelted and cast into gun barrels;

Rìběn rén zài guǎngchǎng kè shàng zhànlǐng shíbēi

The Japanese, during their occupation, engraved a stone stele there in the plaza.

Jiē biān yángsǎn xià huà jiù dāngnián

On the sidewalk, under the parasol, reminiscing on those bygone years;

Nǐ shuō hébì huáchuán lāo yuè

You ask, why go boating to fish for the moon?

Jiēdēng xià zòngqíng xún huān

Underneath the streetlight indulging in pleasure, seeking happiness;

Xīnlì què zǒng bùrú qián

It can never be like the way it was before.

Zài jùnměi chéng zāi de yìguó

In this strange world where beauty turns into a catastrophe,

Bùrú luòbǐ tíbì shūqíng

Isn't it better to put pen to paper, inscribe on the wall, releasing the emotions?

Zhī nǐ mò guòyú yīmiàn huà qiáng

I am well aware that you are worth far more than one side of a wall.

Qiáotóu shuō fēngyǔ chí shēng

The bridgehead said that a storm of trials and tribulations will slowly but surely come;

Yī luò biàn wǎnle qiānnián

Once it falls we will lose a thousand years.
