Zài cūnlǐ, wáng mèizi, lèng sān, zhú sān yé, zhè dōu shì gōnggòng de míngchēng. Shì fán yōnggōng jiējí dōu shì zhèyàng jiǎndān, ér bù biànhuà de míngzì. Zhè jiùshì gōngrén jiējí yīgè tiānrán de biāozhì.
In villages, Sister Wáng, LèngSān, and Third Master Zhú are all common names. All common class laborers have simple and unvaried names. This is a natural symbol of the working class.
王妹子坐在王阿嫂的身邊〔边〕，炕裏〔里〕蹲着小環〔环〕，三個〔个〕人寂寞着。後〔后〕山上不知是什麼〔么〕蟲〔虫〕子，一到中午，就吵叫出一種〔种〕不可忍耐的幽默和悽怨的情緒〔绪〕來〔来〕。
Wáng mèizi zuò zài wáng'āsǎo de shēnbiān, kàng lǐ dūnzhe xiǎo huán, sān gèrén jìmòzhe. Hòu shānshàng bùzhī shì shénme chóngzi, yī dào zhōngwǔ, jiù chǎo jiào chū yī zhǒng bùkě rěnnài de yōumò hé qī yuàn de qíngxù lái.
Sister Wáng sat next to Mrs. Wáng, Little Huán crouched on the heated brick bed, the three of them silent. On the back mountain, some kind of insect, at noon, would cry out bringing an unbearably humorous, yet bleak and mournful, mood.
小環〔环〕雖〔虽〕是七歲〔岁〕，但是就和一個〔个〕少女般的會〔会〕憂〔忧〕愁，會思量。她聽〔听〕着秋蟲〔虫〕吵叫的聲〔声〕音，只是用她的小嘴在學〔学〕着大人嘆氣〔叹气〕。這〔这〕個〔个〕孩子也許〔许〕因爲〔为〕母親〔亲〕死得太早的緣〔缘〕故？
Xiǎo huán suī shì qī suì, dànshì jiù hé yīgè shàonǚ bān de huì yōuchóu, huì sīliang. Tā tīngzhe qiū chóng chǎo jiào de shēngyīn, zhǐshì yòng tā de xiǎo zuǐ zàixuézhe dàrén tànqì. Zhège háizi yěxǔ yīnwèi mǔqīn sǐ dé tài zǎo de yuángù?
Although seven years old, Little Huán knows how to worry and reason like an adult. When she heard the autumn insects chirruping, her small mouth let out a sigh imitating grownups. Perhaps because her mother died too early?
小環〔环〕的父親〔亲〕是一個〔个〕僱〔雇〕工，在她還〔还〕不生下來〔来〕的時候，她的父親〔亲〕就死了！在她五歲〔岁〕的時候她的母親〔亲〕又死了！她的母親〔亲〕是被張〔张〕地主的大兒〔儿〕子張〔张〕胡琦強姦〔强奸〕而後〔后〕氣憤〔气愤〕死了的。
Xiǎo huán de fùqīn shì yīgè gùgōng, zài tā hái bù shēng xiàlái de shíhòu, tā de fùqīn jiù sǐle! Zài tā wǔ suì de shíhòu tā de mǔqīn yòu sǐle. Tā de mǔqīn shì bèi zhāng dìzhǔ de dà érzi zhānghúqí qiángjiān érhòu qìfèn sǐle de.
Little Huán's father was a hired laborer, even before she was born, her father had died! When she was five years old, her mother died! Her mother was raped by landowner Zhāng's oldest son Zhāng HúQí, afterwards she died in anger and outrage.

Wǔ suì de xiǎo huán, kāishǐ zuò gè xiǎo liúlàng zhěle! Cóng tā pínkǔ de gū jiā, yòu zhuǎn dào gèng pínkǔ de yí jiā. Jiéguǒ wèile pínkǔ, bùnéng yǎngyù tā, zuìhòu tā zài zhāng dìzhǔ jiāguòle yī nián jiān'áo de shēnghuó. Zhú sān yé kàn bù guàn xiǎo huán bèi nüèdài de kǔchu. Dāng yītiān wáng'āsǎo dào zhāng jiā qù qǔ mǐ, xiǎo huán zhèng bèi zhāng jiā de háizimen jiāng bízi dǎpò, mǎn liǎn shì xuè, wáng'āsǎo bǎ mǐ dàizi diū luò zài yuàn xīn, tā zǒu jìn xiǎo huán, gěi tā cā zhuó yǎnlèi hé xuè. Xiǎo huán kūzhe, wáng'āsǎo yě kūle!
Five-year-old Little Huán is now a little vagabond! Going from her poverty-stricken father's sister to her even more impoverished mother's sister, in the end due to extreme poverty they were not able to keep her, so she lived at landowner Zhāng's house, suffering a year of torment. Third Master Zhú could not bear seeing Little Huán's misery from abuse. One day Mrs. Wáng went to landowner Zhāng's house to get rice, the Zhāng children were breaking Little Huán's nose, her face covered in blood. Mrs. Wáng left the rice bag in the middle of the courtyard, she went to Little Huán and wiped away her tears and blood. Little Huán was crying, Mrs. Wáng was also crying!
有竹三爺〔爷〕作主，小環〔环〕從〔从〕那天起，就叫王阿嫂做媽媽〔妈妈〕了！那天小環〔环〕是扯着王阿嫂的衣襟來到王阿嫂的家裏〔里〕。
Yǒu zhú sān yé zuò zhǔ, xiǎo huán cóng nèitiān qǐ, jiù jiào wáng'āsǎo zuò māmāle! Nèitiān xiǎo huán shì chězhe wáng'āsǎo de yījīn lái dào wáng'āsǎo de jiālǐ.
With Third Master Zhú presiding, from that day on, Little Huán started calling Mrs. Wáng "mama"! That day Little Huán, clinging to Mrs. Wáng's skirt, arrived at her home.
後〔后〕山的蟲〔虫〕子，不間斷〔间断〕的、不曾間斷〔间断〕的在叫。王阿嫂擰〔拧〕着鼻涕，兩〔两〕腮抽動〔动〕，若不是肚子突出，她簡〔简〕直瘦得像一條龍〔龙〕。她的手也正和爪子一樣〔样〕，爲〔为〕了拔苗割草而骨節〔节〕突出。她的悲哀像沉澱〔淀〕了的澱〔淀〕粉似的，濃〔浓〕重並〔并〕且不可分解。她在說〔说〕着她自己的話〔话〕：
Hòu shān de chóngzi, bù jiànduàn de, bùcéng jiànduàn de zài jiào. Wáng'āsǎo níngzhe bítì, liǎng sāi chōudòng, ruò bùshì dùzi túchū, tā jiǎnzhí shòu dé xiàng yītiáo lóng. Tā de shǒu yě zhènghé zhuǎzi yīyàng, wèile bá miáo gē cǎo ér gǔjié túchū. Tā de bēi'āi xiàng chéndiànle de diànfěn shì de, nóngzhòng bìngqiě bùkě fēnjiě. Tā zài shuōzhe tā zìjǐ dehuà:
The back mountain insects were incessantly, without interruption, incessantly wailing. Mrs. Wáng pinched her runny nose, her two cheeks quivered, if it wasn't for her protruding stomach she'd be as skinny as a dragon. Her hands are like claws, her knuckles bony from planting and weeding. Her grief was thickening like starch, dense and inseparable. She said in her own words:

“Wáng mèizi, nǐ xiǎng wǒ hái néng zài huó xiàqù ma? Zuótiān zài tiánzhuāng shàng zhāng dìzhǔ shì tīle wǒ yī jiǎo. Nàgè yěshòu, tī dé wǒ jiǎnzhí fāhūnle, nǐ cāi tā wèishéme tī wǒ ne? Zǎochén tàiyáng yī chū jiù zuògōng, hǎo shēnzi dào méi fáng'ài, wǒ zhǐshì zài yě dài bù dòng wǒ de dùzile! Yòu shìgè zhèngwǔ shíhòu, wǒ zuò zài dì shāo de yīduān chuǎn liǎng kǒuqì, tā jiù lái tīle wǒ yī jiǎo.”
"Sister Wáng, do you think I can stay alive? Yesterday on the farm, landowner Zhāng kicked me. That barbaric beast, he kicked me so hard I nearly fainted! Do you know why he kicked me? I started working as soon as the sun rose, with a healthy body it never bothered me, I just couldn't move my belly anymore! It was high noon, I sat down on the ground off to the side, to take a breather, he came over and kicked me."

“Yǎnkànzhe tā bàba sǐle sān gè yuèle! Nà shì gāngguòle wǔ yuè jié de shíhòu, nà shí jǐn sì gè yuè, xiànzài zhège háizi kuài shēng xiàláile! Hāi! Shénme háizi, jiùshì yuānjiā, tā bàba dì xìngmìng shì sàng zài zhāng dìzhǔ de shǒu lǐ, wǒ yě fēi sǐ zài tāmen de shǒu lǐ bùkě, wǒ xiǎng shéi yě táo bù chū dìzhǔmen de shǒu qù.”
"The baby's father has been dead for three months! It was right after the May 5th festival, I was four months pregnant, soon the baby will be born! Ay! Not a baby, but a victim, the father lost his life at the hands of landowner Zhāng, I am too will to die in their hands, I don't think anyone can escape from the clutches of these landowners."

Wáng'āsǎo de jiāntóu chōudòng dé jiāsù qǐlái. Wáng mèizi de xīntiàozhe, tā zài huǐhèn de tiàozhe, tā kāishǐ zài huǐhèn:

“Rén yībèizi jiùshì zhèyàng, dōu shì nǐ máng wǒ máng, jiéguǒ shéi yě bùshì yīgè sǐ ma? Zǎosǐ wǎn sǐ bùshì yīyàng ma?”
"This is human life: You're busy, I'm busy, the result is the same, we all die. Dying earlier or dying later, isn't it all the same?“
說〔说〕着她用手巾給〔给〕王阿嫂擦着眼淚〔泪〕，揩着她一生流不盡〔尽〕的眼淚〔泪〕：
Shuōzhe tā yòng shǒujīn gěi wáng'āsǎo cā zhuó yǎnlèi, kāizhe tā yīshēng liú bù jìn de yǎnlèi:
As she spoke she used a handkerchief to wipe Mrs. Wáng's tears, wiping her lifetime of never ending tears:
—— 嫂子你別太想不開〔开〕呀！身子這種樣〔这种样〕，一勁〔劲〕憂〔忧〕愁，並〔并〕且你看着小環〔环〕也該〔该〕寬〔宽〕心。那個〔个〕孩子太知好歹了！你憂〔忧〕愁，你哭，孩子也跟着憂〔忧〕愁，跟着哭。倒是讓〔让〕我做點〔点〕飯〔饭〕給〔给〕你喫〔吃〕，看外邊〔边〕的日影快晌午了！——
“Sǎozi nǐ bié tài xiǎngbùkāi ya! Shēnzi zhè zhǒng yàng, yī jìn yōuchóu, bìngqiě nǐ kànzhe xiǎo huán yě gāi kuānxīn. Nàgè háizi tài zhī hǎodǎile! Nǐ yōuchóu, nǐ kū, háizi yě gēnzhe yōuchóu, gēnzhe kū. Dǎoshì ràng wǒ zuò diǎn fàn gěi nǐ chī, kàn wàibian de rì yǐng kuài shǎngwule!”
"Sister-in-law, don't be too stuck in your thoughts. With your body like this, it saps your strength to be anxious, besides, on account of Little Huán, relax your heart. This child is too discerning. When you are sad and cry, the child will also be sad and cry along with you. Let me cook you something, look at the sun's shadow, it's almost noon!"
王妹子心裏〔里〕這樣〔这样〕相信着：
Wáng mèizi xīnlǐ zhèyàng xiāngxìnzhe:
Sister Wáng, in her heart, believes:
—— 她的肚子被踢得胎兒〔儿〕活動〔动〕了！危險〔险〕……死……”
“Tā de dùzi bèi tī dé tāi'ér huódòngle! Wéixiǎn……sǐ……”

Sister Wáng decided to go to landowner Zhāng's house to get rice, she took down a bowl from above the barrel. Mrs. Wáng sighed and said:
—— 不要去呀！我不願〔愿〕看他家那種〔种〕臉〔脸〕色，叫小環〔环〕到後〔后〕山竹三爺〔爷〕家去借點〔点〕吧！——
“Bùyào qù ya! Wǒ bù yuàn kàn tā jiā nà zhǒng liǎnsè, jiào xiǎo huán dào hòu shānzhú sān yé jiā qù jiè diǎn ba!”
"Don't go! I can't stand their attitude. Tell Little Huán to go to the back mountain and borrow some from Third Master Zhú."
小環〔环〕捧着瓦盆爬上坡，小辮〔辫〕在脖子上摔搭摔搭的走向山後〔后〕去了！山上的蟲〔虫〕子在憔悴的野花間〔间〕，叫着憔悴的聲〔声〕音啊！
Xiǎo huán pěngzhe wǎ pén pá shàng pō, xiǎobiàn zài bózi shàng shuāi dā shuāi dā de zǒuxiàng shān hòu qùle! Shānshàng de chóngzi zài qiáocuì de yěhuā jiān, jiàozhe qiáocuì de shēngyīn a!
Little Huán balancing the clay bowl in both hands, climbed the hill, her pigtails swayed back and forth against her neck as she walked towards the back mountain. The mountain insects, amid the withered and mournful wildflowers, are crying a withered and mournful lamentation.
