Big Brother Wáng, three months ago, was driving landowner Zhāng's manure cart, the horse broke its leg on a stone, so landowner Zhāng withheld a year's wages. Big Brother Wáng was extremely furious, drinking all day, out all night, he would fall asleep in a neighbor's haystack. Later on he really went insane! He'll beat every child and dog that he comes across, and run amok on the farm, cursing wildly. While Big Brother Wáng was sleeping in the haystack, landowner Zhāng sent someone to light it on fire. Big Brother Wáng flailed around in the flames, writhing inside the flames of landowner Zhāng, with his tongue lolling over his lips, he howled out an inhuman sound.
有誰〔谁〕來〔来〕救他呢？窮〔穷〕人連〔连〕妻子都不是自己的。王阿嫂只是在前村田莊〔庄〕上拾土豆，她的男人卻〔却〕在後〔后〕村給〔给〕人家燒〔烧〕死了。
Yǒu shéi lái jiù tā ne? Qióngrén lián qīzi dōu bùshì zìjǐ de. Wáng'āsǎo zhǐshì zài qián cūn tiánzhuāng shàng shí tǔdòu, tā de nánrén què zài hòu cūn jǐ rénjiā shāo sǐle.
Who can save him? Even a poor man's wife is not his own. While Mrs. Wáng was in the front village on the farm picking potatoes, her man was in the back village being burned to death.

Dāng wáng'āsǎo bēn dào huǒ duī pángbiān, wáng dàgē de gǔtou yǐjīng shāo duànle! Sìzhī tuōluò, nǎoké zhí hé bàn gè pò húlu yīyàng, huǒ suī xī miè, dàn wáng dàgē de qìwèi què zài quán cūn piào yàng.
By the time Mrs. Wáng rushed over to the burnt haystack, Big Brother Wáng's bones were already roasted to a crisp! All four limbs had fallen off and his skull was like half of a broken gourd. The fire had died out, however the smell of Big Brother Wáng floated across the entire village.
四圍〔围〕看熱〔热〕鬧〔闹〕的人羣〔群〕們〔们〕有的說〔说〕，擦着眼睛說〔说〕：

Mrs. Wáng picked up Big Brother Wáng's bones, wrapped them in her clothes, hugging them tightly, she let out a wail that reached the sky. Her devastating bloodcurdling cry, enshrouded the grasslands, passed through the forest's ancient trees, until it reached the distant mountains and echoed.

Měi gè kàn rènào de nǚrén, dōu bèi zhège dīzhe xuè de shēngyīn yòuhuò dé kūle! Měi gè zài kū de fù rén zài shēngzhe cuòjué, jiù xiàng zìjǐ de nánrén bèi shāo sǐ yīyàng.
Every woman who came to see the excitement was reduced to tears by this blood wringing sound. Every married woman was crying as if under the delusion that their own man had been burned to death.

—— 王阿嫂你不要這樣〔这样〕啊！你抱着骨頭〔头〕又有什麼〔么〕用呢？要想後〔后〕事。——
Wáng'āsǎo nǐ bùyào zhèyàng a! Nǐ bàozhe gǔtou yòu yǒu shé me yòng ne? Yào xiǎng hòu shì.
"Don't be like this, Mrs. Wáng! What is the use of clinging to these bones? You need to start thinking about the funeral."

Wáng'āsǎo bù tīng biérén, tā kàn bùjiàn biérén, tā zhǐyǒu zìjǐ. Bǎ gǔtou yòu qiǎngzhe fēngkuáng de bāo zài yījīn xià, tā bù zhīdào zhè gǔtou méi línghún, yě méiyǒu ròutǐ, yīqiè tā dōu bùnéng biànmíng. Tā zài wáng dàgē sǐshī bèi shāo de qìwèi lǐ dǎgǔn, tā xiàng bùkě jiětuō de bēitòng lǐ yòng jìn le tā de quánlì de zuān hē!
Mrs. Wáng couldn't hear anyone. She couldn't see anyone. She was utterly alone. She frantically snatched back the bones and wrapped them in her clothing. She didn't know that these bones do not have a soul, nor a body. She was not able to grasp any of this. She started rolling in the odor of Big Brother Wáng's burnt corpse, and exhausted all of her strength, burrowing into this inextricable grief.

Māmā, nǐ bùyào kū fēngle a! Bàba bùshì yīnwèi fēng cái bèi rén shāo sǐ de ma?
Mama, don't cry yourself crazy! Didn't daddy get burned to death because he's crazy?
王阿嫂，她聽〔听〕不到小環〔环〕的話〔话〕，鼓着肚子，張〔张〕開〔开〕肺葉〔叶〕般的哭。她的手撕着衣裳，她的牙齒〔齿〕在咬嘴唇。她和一匹吼叫的獅〔狮〕子一樣〔样〕。

Mrs. Wáng did not hear Little Huán's words, bearing her belly, she cried her lungs out. Her hands tore at her clothes and she bit her lips. She wailed like a roaring lion.

Landowner Zhāng, holding a fly swatter, was like a sinister old eagle, shaking his wings, with bulging eyes and a hooked nose. He walked with measured steps to the beat of a person with money and status, and arrived from the front village. Using his overbearing tone to win over Mrs. Wáng:
—— 天快黑了！還〔还〕一勁〔劲〕哭什麼〔么〕！一個〔个〕瘋〔疯〕子死就死了吧！他的骨頭〔头〕有什麼〔么〕值錢〔钱〕。你回家做你以後〔后〕的打算好了！現〔现〕在我遣人把他埋到西崗〔岗〕子去。——
Tiān kuài hēile! Huán yī jìn kū shénme! Yīgè fēngzi sǐ jiù sǐle ba! Tā de gǔtou yǒu shé me zhíqián. Nǐ huí jiā zuò nǐ yǐhòu de dǎsuàn hǎole! Xiànzài wǒ qiǎn rén bǎ tā mái dào xī gǎngzi qù.
"It will be dark soon! Why are you still crying? So what if a lunatic dies? His bones are not worth anything. Go home and plan for your future. Right now I will send someone to bury him at West Mound."
說〔说〕着他向四周的男人們〔们〕下個〔个〕口令：
Shuōzhe tā xiàng sìzhōu de nánrénmen xià gè kǒulìng:

Wáng dàgē shì zhāng lǎoyézi shāo sǐ de, zhè shìqíng fù rénmen bù zhīdào, yīdiǎn bù zhīdào. Tiánzhuāng shàng de màicǎo dǎ qǐ liúshuǐ yàng de bōwén, yāntǒng lǐ tǔ chūlái de chuīyān, zài rénjiā de fáng dǐng shàng xuàn juǎn.
The wives were ignorant of the fact that Big Brother Wáng was burned to death by Master Zhāng, they were completely in the dark. On the farm, the wheat rippled like waves, and smoke billowed out of the chimney, onto the rooftop, swirling.
蒼蠅〔苍蝇〕拂子擺動〔摆动〕着吸人血的姿式，張〔张〕地主走回前村去。
